Towards understanding the child’s experience in the process of parentification: young adults’ reflections on growing up with a depressed parent

This article reports on a qualitative study with 21 young adults who grew up with a depressed parent. We examined how young adults make sense of their childhood experiences of parental depression and how their retrospective reflections help us to understand the experiences of children and the processes of parentification. Participants recounted that their childhood consisted mainly of actions in the service of family well-being. At that time, they reflected on their own experiences only rarely. In adolescence, there was an evolution toward a greater consideration for oneself and a repositioning within the family. In the discussion, we explore the therapeutic implications of this studyand in particularthe meaningfulness of silence in the family process of parentification

Evaluation of Post Restoration Conditions at Little River Marsh in North Hampton, New Hampshire

The goals of the restoration project at Little River were two-fold: 1) restore ecological function of the marsh by reestablishing regular tidal flooding; and 2) reduce the frequency and severity of local flooding to surrounding landowners. Our report documents substantial progress toward the first goal using regional monitoring protocols to assess four functional areas: hydrology, soils, vegetation and nekton. Installation of two large box culverts (each 1.8 by 3.6 m in cross-section) greatly enhanced tidal flow and freshwater drainage. The tide range increased from 0.5 to 1.4 m during spring tides and now even neap high tides flood most of the marsh surface. The marsh has responded to the increased tidal exchange. In the year following installation of the culverts, soil salinity increased and became similar to levels found at Awcomin Marsh, which was used as a reference site. The marsh vegetation has shown steady changes, including increased native halophytes and decline of invasive plants, so that after five years the cover of halophytes, brackish plants, and invasives are similar to those found at Awcomin Marsh. Little River Marsh shows a clear trajectory towards establishment of a functioning salt marsh system. However, changes are likely to continue as the full range of ecological functions and values become realized at this site

While the disclosing of information is important, it seems that support of emotionally vulnerable family members is more important. Silence is preferred when the vulnerable participants risk to become overwhelmed or when people are not sure what is acceptable to say

Post-divorce wellbeing in Flanders: facilitative professionals and quality of arrangements matter

Expanding on current advancement in divorce and family dispute resolution research, an integrative and process-oriented model is presented. This article explores the extent to which, and how, individual, trajectory, and arrangement factors are related to post-divorce personal wellbeing. Questionnaire data were collected from a sample of 423 individuals who divorced through mediation or litigation. A subsample of 112 respondents provided extra information on the personal qualities of divorce professionals. A series of multiple regression analysis demonstrated that: (1) gender, (2) experienced facilitative problem solving behaviors and the Rogerian personal qualities of professionals, and (3) the quality of divorce arrangements all directly relate to post-divorce wellbeing. No significant associations emerged for other individual characteristics (i.e., age, having children or not, pre-divorce conflict levels, relationship duration, initiator-status), or trajectory features (i.e., type of professional and type of legal procedure). Path analytic procedures did not show any indirect effect from problem solving behaviors or Rogerian attitudes of lawyers and mediators on post-divorce wellbeing through its effect on the quality of divorce arrangements. Lag Length Selection for Unit Root Tests in the Presence of Nonstationary Volatility

A number of recently published papers have focused on the problem of testing for a unit root in the case where the driving shocks may be unconditionally heteroskedastic. These papers have, however, assumed that the lag length in the unit root test regression is a deterministic function of the sample size, rather than data-determined, the latter being standard empirical practice. In this paper we investigate the finite sample impact of unconditional heteroskedasticity on conventional data-dependent methods of lag selection in augmented Dickey-Fuller type unit root test regressions and propose new lag selection criteria which allow for the presence of heteroskedasticity in the shocks. We show that standard lag selection methods show a tendency to over-fit the lag order under heteroskedasticity, which results in significant power losses in the (wild bootstrap implementation of the) augmented Dickey-Fuller tests under the alternative. The new lag selection criteria we propose are shown to avoid this problem yet deliver unit roots with almost identical finite sample size and power properties as the corresponding tests based on conventional lag selection methods when the shocks are homoskedastic

Living as a cancer survivor : a qualitative study on the experiences of Belgian adolescents and young adults (AYAs) after childhood cancer

PURPOSE: Insight was sought in how a childhood cancer experience plays a role in daily life of adolescents and young adults (AYA) survivors. DESIGN AND METHODS: A qualitative research in which semi-structured interviews were held with 21 AYA survivors of childhood cancer between the ages of 14 and 25. The AYA survivors were recruited from two pediatric oncology departments of two university hospitals in Belgium. RESULTS: The current situation and behavior of AYA-survivors who have been treated for childhood cancer are covered in 5 categories: The Feeling of Being Different while Aiming for Normalcy in Relationships, Living with Existential Uncertainty, The Conscious Protection of Health, The Attachment to the Parent(s) with Whom the Cancer Experience was Shared, and The Desire to Be Meaningful to Others. CONCLUSIONS: The AYA survivors did not feel that their cancer experience dominated their current daily life, yet, the cancer experience had an important impact on their functioning. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: The findings of the study can be used to optimize holistic psychosocial care of AYA survivors. By starting from the key elements in their current functioning, health care professionals can tailor their support to the way in which AYA survivors have integrated their cancer experience into their everyday lives

On demand manufacturing of patient-specific liquid capsules via co-ordinated 3D printing and liquid dispensing

A method for the production of liquid capsules with the potential of modifying drug dose and release is presented. For the first time, the co-ordinated use of fused deposition modelling (FDM), 3D printing and liquid dispensing to fabricate individualised dosage form on demand in a fully automated fashion has been demonstrated. Polymethacrylate shells (Eudragit EPO and RL) for immediate and extended release were fabricated using FDM 3D printing and simultaneously filled using a computer-controlled liquid dispenser loaded with model drug solution (theophylline) or suspension (dipyridamole). The impact of printing modes: simultaneous shell printing and filling (single-phase) or sequential 3D printing of shell bottom, filling and shell cap (multi-phase), nozzle size, syringe volume, and shell structure has been reported. The use of shell thickness of 1.6 mm, and concentric architecture allowed successful containment of liquid core whilst maintaining the release properties of the 3D printed liquid capsule. The linear relationship between the theoretical and the actual volumes from the dispenser reflected its potential for accurate dosing (R  = 0.9985). Modifying the shell thickness of Eudragit RL capsule allowed a controlled extended drug release without the need for formulation change. Owing to its low cost and versatility, this approach can be adapted to wide spectrum of liquid formulations such as small and large molecule solutions and obviate the need for compatibility with the high temperature of FDM 3D printing process. In a clinical setting, health care staff will be able to instantly manufacture in small volumes liquid capsules with individualised dose contents and release pattern in response to specific patient's needs. Understanding parental views of adolescent sexuality and sex education in Ecuador: a qualitative study

Parents' contribution to sex education is increasingly receiving research attention. This growing interest stems from recognition of the influence that parental attitudes may have both on young people's sexual attitudes and behaviour, and on school-based sex education. Studies regarding parental attitudes towards sexuality are, however, still rare. The two main objectives of this study were to explore parental views about sexuality and to understand parental attitudes towards sex education. Four focus group discussions were conducted with parents from high schools in Cuenca, Ecuador. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. The study revealed that parents held a restricted view about sex education, grounded in traditional religious ideas about sexuality, which led parents to understand it as a morally and physically dangerous activity. Although parents expressed a willingness to make good quality sex education available to their children, they reported having insufficient personal resources to fulfil that objective. The results of this study provide important information about the need to develop and adapt sex education to each specific cultural context, thereby confirming the importance of knowing about the cultural traditions and religious beliefs that may form obstacles to effective sex education for young people in Ecuador.Cuencavolumen 14; número
